The transformation of an industrial monument - the Quelle site in Nuremberg

4:10 PM - 4:30 PM Thu 07. Nov

Short description

In this lecture, Prof. Johannes Kister presents the transformation of the Quelle mail order and department store in Nuremberg.

Description

The Quelle mail order and department store in Nuremberg is an impressively large industrial monument that is currently being transformed into a mixed-use quarter in accordance with plans by kister scheithauer gross, who have already realized several transformation projects, while preserving its substance. The commercial building was constructed in the 1950s according to plans by Ernst Neufert in various construction phases. Historically, Quelle, as a mail order company, was an important driver of economic development in Germany after the war and is a symbol of the economic miracle. As a protagonist of modernism, Neufert created an architecture that set the stage for the impressive machinery inside. When Quelle went bankrupt in 2009, more than 250,000 m² of space stood empty. Since 2019, kister scheithauer gross has been responsible for the refurbishment of the first section of the complex. With the transformation, the Neufert building will outlive its original use and be given a second future as an architectural monument. It will both remain as a landmark and take on new life.
