The chandeliers of Munich’s Frauenkirche are an remarkable feature of the church that are vital in contributing to the spiritual atmosphere. Our aim was not only to meet the requirements for task lighting, but also to let the luminaires themselves shine and integrate them into the architecture. To achieve this, we retained the existing light points and replaced them with simple cylindrical housings with heat sinks and updated the light source to LEDs in combination with lenses. New lighting elements, whose shape and material are reminiscent of candles, illuminate the walls and emphasize the shape of the luminaire. The dim-to-warm LED technology (2700-1800K), which imitates the effect of light bulbs and thus enables variable lighting design, increases the quality of light and improves energy efficiency. The successful collaboration of all parties involved is a sign of how tradition and innovation can be harmonized to preserve and enrich cultural heritage.
