In times of climate crisis and resource scarcity, sustainable building materials are becoming increasingly important. The Chair of Structural Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is conducting intensive research into alternative building materials. Two promising approaches are based on clay and straw.
The StrawBrick is a development that mediates between load-bearing conventional and straw bale masonry and is intended to combine the positive aspects of both constructions. The brick has the practicality of bricks and the ecological friendliness of straw bales, but at the same time is much more load-bearing than the latter.
Liquid Clay is an innovative advancement of traditional clay construction. By adding specific organic and inorganic additives, clay is liquefied without the need for additional water. This not only enables more efficient manufacturing processes but also allows for the creation of complex shapes at comparatively low costs.
